Solar blinds are becoming a favorite choice for many homeowners in Canada. Why? Because they help save money on heating and cooling while letting you enjoy a clear view outside. But how do solar blinds work?

What exactly are solar blinds? Are they see-through? Can they really keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer? We know you have questions, and we have the answers.

We’ve collected the most common questions from our clients, including “how do solar blinds work?”, and answered them all right here to help you see if solar blinds are the right choice for your home. Let’s dive in to learn more about their special features and benefits.

1. WHAT ARE SOLAR BLINDS?

Solar blinds are special window coverings that can shield your home from the harsh sun while still letting in light. They are great for windows that get a lot of sun. Not only do they cut down on sun glare and protect your home from harmful UV rays, but they also prevent your carpets and furniture from fading due to sun exposure. If you want to keep the sunshine without the downsides, solar blinds might be perfect for you.

2. WHAT ARE SOLAR BLINDS MADE OF?

  • Polyester: Often used because of its durability and ability to hold color well.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Chosen for its strength and resistance to weather and UV rays.
  • Solar Screen Fabrics: Special fabrics designed to reduce glare, resist UV rays, and maintain a view of the outside while offering privacy.
  • Bamboo and Other Woods: Sometimes used for their natural appearance and eco-friendliness.
  • Aluminum: Used in some solar blinds for its durability and modern appearance.
  • Cellular/Honeycomb Materials: These are materials structured with air pockets to provide insulation and energy efficiency.

3. ARE SOLAR BLINDS SEE-THROUTH?

Solar blinds can be somewhat see-through. How see-through they are depends on the “openness” of the fabric used. If the fabric has a lower openness percentage, it means you can see through it less and it lets in less light. So, you can choose the level of openness based on how much privacy and light you want.

4. DO SOLAR BLINDS PROVIDE PRIVACY?

During the day, solar blinds with a lower openness factor (meaning they have smaller holes in the fabric) will provide more privacy while still allowing you to enjoy natural light.

In the evening, especially when the interior is illuminated, the privacy offered by solar blinds can be significantly reduced; it becomes easier to see inside from the outside.

To enhance privacy, especially at night, you might consider pairing solar blinds with another window treatment, such as curtains or drapes, which you can close in the evening to ensure full privacy.

5.CAN YOU SEE THROUTH SOLAR BLINDS FROM OUTSIDE AT NIGNT?

Yes, when it’s dark outside and you have lights on inside near the blinds, people might be able to see into your home through the solar blinds. To keep your home private at night, think about using curtains along with your blinds.

6.DO SOLAR BLINDS KEEP HEAT AND COLD OUT?

Yes, solar blinds can help you maintain a comfortable temperature in your home all year round. They add an extra layer of insulation to your windows, keeping the heat out in the summer and trapping warmth in the winter, which can also save you money on your energy bills.

8. HOW LONG CAN YOU EXPECT SOLAR BLINDS TO LAST?

Solar blinds are a strong and green choice compared to regular blinds. While regular shades might last 3-5 years, solar blinds can keep going for a long time, between 10 and 20 years. This makes them not only a more eco-friendly option but also a more durable one.

9. CAN YOU INSTALL SOLAR BLINDS ON SLIDING-GLASS OR FRENCH DOORS?

Absolutely, you can use solar blinds for sliding glass or French doors. Krumpers offers a wide range of options suitable for all kinds of unique windows including those that are oddly-shaped, angled, or even skylights, ensuring a perfect fit for any window type.
